Watch out for lottery scams. If you receive an email from a lottery you did not enter, it is a scam.

In most cases the email accounts in the email are free email accounts and the phone number is a mobile phone.

NEVER send any money to the criminals behind these scams. If you do, they will just invent a new fee you have to pay, and if you pay that, they invent a new fee, etc etc until you give up or run out of money.

My friend Toshi had to give up his studies on the university because he sent the scammer all his own money as well as some borrowed money.

Another friend, Mr. Steward, also payed much more than he could afford, before he finally had to give up. His scammers were very convincing, and made him pay again and again.

Others have come in the same situation, and every time it happens it is a personal disaster for the victim.

A fake Microsoft Lottery was reported to Microsoft. This was their answer:

Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006
From: "Microsoft Contact US" <msconus @ microsoft.com>

Thank you for your email concerning the bogus lottery email.

As you probably suspected, this is a hoax and did not originate from us. Neither Microsoft, nor Bill Gates personally, has any connection whatsoever with this alleged lottery. Privacy and security are very important to us here at Microsoft, and we work every day to build great software for the Internet that keeps information safe, secure and private. I would recommend you to report this to abuse@microsoft.com for us to be able to investigate this further.

Here are more stories about lotteries I won:

I have set up the this website because I am worried for all those who are tempted by the millions of dollars they are offered by the scammers. I hope that my stories will make them realize that it is all lies. Many of the stories contain names of real persons, banks and historic events, and it shows that the scammers will use every trick in the book to get you to pay.

This site is funded by me, and it takes a big effort to keep it up-to-date. You can help me in keeping it alive by making a small donation.
